Caroline Street sees heavy pedestrian traffic on a daily basis, especially during school pick-up and drop-off times at Caroline Street School. Currently, the sidewalk down Caroline Street ends abruptly in the middle of a block, before the intersection with Schuyler Drive. The new construction will extend the sidewalk five blocks further, connecting more of the community with a safe route through the neighborhood. The total cost of the project will be around $300,000. Assemblywoman Carrie Woerner’s office is providing half of the money, and the Department of Public Works is contributing the other half. It is estimated that once construction begins, it will be completed in about two months. For DPW Commissioner Jason Golub, this initiative has a degree of personal priority. His own daughter starts fifth grade next week, and he understands well the importance of a safe route to and from school. “The safety of our children should be our number one priority,” Golub told the Saratogian. “If we’re not doing everything we can to protect our kids, we’re not doing our jobs as parents. As a parent, I know this infrastructure is incredibly important to the community.”
