The outrageous ruling of the Supreme Court in overturning Roe v. Wade is the direct result of Republican strategy to install extremist, intolerant officials at every level from local to national government. We who believe in democracy, and refuse to accept that a woman is a second-class citizen with no control over her own body, cannot let this stand. What can we do?
First, support reproductive health provers and advocates. Women who can no longer get reproductive care in their own states will be coming to New York where a woman still has the right to choose. This will place a strain on providers with a greatly increased caseload. Donate to Planned Parenthood and to regional providers of women’s reproductive care. On a national level, a contribution at this ActBlue linkwill be shared with over 80 funds supporting women in states where abortion is now illegal or much more restrictive.
Second, support and elect Democratic candidates who will work to stop this madness. In his concurring opinion, Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas commented that marriage equality, sexual intimacy and access to birth control might be next on the chopping block. Is this the America you want to live in?
The midterms are coming up, and Republicans are licking their chops at the potential to take over both houses of Congress and install state officials who will enact or pursue their radical agenda. Don’t let them get away with it. Support your candidates financially. VOTE in every election and bring friends and family members with you to the polls.
The New York Democratic Primary is this Tuesday, June 28. Turnout is expected to be low because only two positions are contested, with an incumbent in each race. Don’t let that stop you; in fact, make that a reason you WILL vote even if you had planned to pass on this election. It’s an immediate opportunity to let the radical right know that we’re here, and we’re more than ready for this fight. [Update: thanks to all who voted!]
