Saratoga Springs will get its own poet laureate.

“I am excited to announce that we passed legislation creating a process to select a Poet Laureate of Saratoga Springs,” wrote Mayor Ron Kim on his Facebook page. “Rachel Baum has been appointed as the chair.” Ms. Baum, a Saratoga resident and former President of the New York Library Association, had made the proposal at a previous City Council meeting and cited a stat that every dollar spent on the arts returns $7 in revenue. The post is an honorary one, awarded to a poet whose work is considered to be of cultural significance; the poet laureate will be the literary ambassador for the city. A nomination form will be available in the next few weeks, and the name of the new poet laureate for a two-year term will be revealed on December 15.
