In an effort to acknowledge a history of systemic racism, Mayor Ron Kim introduced a resolution in the May 2 meeting that would apologize for past injustices and form a Restorative Justice Panel to begin a community-wide dialogue on racism in the city. The resolution, which passed with a 4-1 vote, would ultimately lead to the creation of what Kim calls a restorative justice program, also reinstates the first point of 50 in the city’s Police Reform Task Force’s original recommendations that sought to “acknowledge, apologize, reconcile and review” past injustices. That first point was eliminated by the previous City Council. From the Times-Union.
