At its first meeting on Tuesday, January 4, the newly-elected council voted unanimously to ask Saratoga County District Attorney Karen Heggen to call for a noncriminal grand jury investigation into the 2014 death of Darryl Mount Jr., the 21-year-old biracial man who died nine months after city police pursued him on foot. According to the Times-Union, it also scheduled a public hearing on Tuesday, Feb. 1, to begin a process of creating a Civilian Review Board to review incidents of police misconduct, something the previous council was unwilling to do. Public Safety Commissioner James Montagnino was to present his own report on Mount’s death this week, but it was delayed as he was hospitalized with COVID-19 in the days leading up to his Jan. 1 swearing-in. He said he will present his report, based on public records, in the coming weeks.
