The Democrat challenging incumbent Saratoga County District Attorney Karen Heggen is accusing the Republican of mishandling a case involving the death of a 20-year-old last July 4 on Saratoga Lake, according to the Times-Union. Michael Phillips said by allowing Blake Heflin to plead guilty to a misdemeanor assault charge and boating while intoxicated after his actions led to Ian Gerber’s death shows a “fundamental inability to grasp the concept of the public trust placed in the office of a county prosecutor in New York State.” Phillips pointed out that three members of Heflin’s family are employed by Saratoga County, and that her office didn’t investigate who bought alcohol for the underage drinkers and didn’t convene a grand jury.
