Editorial: Spa City’s abuse of rights

“Last week’s disclosure of a state report on the treatment of Black Lives Matter activists in 2021 by Saratoga Springs police and public officials ought to outrage anyone who respects the constitutional rights of freedom of speech, peaceable assembly and petitioning government for a redress of grievances. And the residents of Saratoga Springs ought to be doubly outraged, since they could quite likely be on the financial hook for the abuse of those rights at the behest of former top city officials who seemed to think they could pick and choose who merited First Amendment protection in the city, and who didn’t. Little wonder that the city’s last insurance carrier refused to renew its coverage, which former Mayor Ron Kim noted was largely due to this very issue.” From the Times-Union (paywall-free link).
