"In the Loop" for Nov. 24, 2017

SSDC Holiday Party is December 10! Food, fellowship, celebration. The Democratic community is invited. Plan to come, send in your check—See “Events.”

Thank you, Mayor Yepsen! At the SSDC’s November meeting, Mayor Joanne Yepsen was recognized for her record of public service. Photo, commendation here.

What does resistance look like?

Safeguarding our elections. It’s an uneasy feeling, not knowing how badly the interference, foreign and domestic, affected the 2016 presidential election – and how vulnerable our elections will be, going forward. A citizen project called Unhack the Vote is working on both these questions. (Twitter users: you can follow MikeFarb @mikefarb1.)

City briefs. Supporters of a new City Charter filed a FOIL request at the BOE, seeking impoundment of the votes and a recount of the Nov. 7 vote, which went against charter change by 10 votes (out of some 8,900 cast). . . . A judge has ruled against the Zoning Board of Appeals for its decision not to review neighbors’ objections to the proposed building next to Shelters of Saratoga that would serve as Code Blue’s permanent home. . . . A state agency has recommended that the City Center should adopt a formal policy governing displays on its public marquee, after a complaint last month about displaying the name of a political candidate’s campaign that was holding a function there. . . . A judge has issued a 60-day stay that means the City cannot begin construction of the Geyser Road Trail using eminent domain.

More City news. The Melanie Foundation gave a gift of $15,000 to the Saratoga Springs Senior Center last week. . . . Owners of the Downtowner Motel at Division and Broadway sold their prime corner for $4.55 million to Lark Hotels, which plans to renovate the existing business, keeping the same motel footprint. . . . Burns Management obtained a $6.5 million construction loan to build 35 more apartments at the Excelsior Park development, according to Albany Business Review. . .  . Some 3,700 runners took part in the 16th annual Turkey Trot on Thanksgiving morning. . . . Looking for someplace different for out-of-town guests (or you!) to stay? Check out some of the City’s historic inns, B&Bs.
